After completing a six-day remand in connection with a four-count murder case and a sabotage case in Singair, Manikganj-2 former MP and popular singer Momtaz Begum has been sent to the Kashimpur Central Jail.
At around 11:30am on Sunday, she was presented before Manikganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Ivy Akter’s court, which ordered her transfer to jail.
Earlier that morning, around 9am, she was brought to the Manikganj court from Harirampur police station under tight security after the completion of her two-day remand.
Harirampur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Momin Khan said: “During the two-day remand in the vandalism case filed at Harirampur police station, we obtained significant information from her related to the case. We are now investigating based on that information.”
Previously, on May 22, in the four-count murder case filed with Singair police station, Manikganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Abdun Nur had granted a four-day remand.
On the same day, Senior Judicial Magistrate Ivy Akter granted another two-day remand in the sabotage case filed with Harirampur police station.
As the Singair police station building was deemed risky, the remand hearing for the Singair case was conducted from Harirampur police station.
On Tuesday, Momtaz was kept at Harirampur police station while the investigating officer of the Singair case conducted the hearing.
After that hearing, she was again taken into two-day remand at Harirampur police station on Friday. Following the completion of that remand period, she has now been sent to Kashimpur Jail.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Jasim Uddin, the investigating officer of the murder case filed at Singair police station, said: “During interrogation in the murder case, we obtained important information from Momtaz Begum. We are continuing our investigation based on that information.”
It is worth noting that in 2013, four people were shot dead by police during a hartal (strike) rally in support of the shutdown in the Gobindal area of Singair.
A decade later, on October 25, 2024, Majnu Molla, a relative of one of the victims, filed a murder case naming Momtaz Begum as the prime accused.
