On Saturday, Supreme Court lawyer Md Jasim Uddin sent the notice via postal mail and also through Sarjis Alam’s WhatsApp number, Bangla Tribune reports.
The notice instructs Sarjis Alam to submit a written and unconditional apology to the chief justice through the Registrar General of the Supreme Court. Additionally, he has been asked to hold a press conference and apologize to the public within two hours. Otherwise, the lawyer stated in the notice that he would file a contempt of court case against Sarjis.
According to the notice, lawyer Mamunur Rashid had filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the Election Commission's gazette and the election tribunal's verdict that declared Md Ishraq Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. On Thursday, the High Court dismissed the writ petition.
Following the verdict, Sarjis posted a reaction about the ruling at 11:49am from his verified Facebook account, which was later published by the media. The notice claims that through this comment, Sarjis showed disrespect toward the judiciary, a key pillar of the state, and that his remarks constitute contempt of court and damage the dignity of the judiciary.
