Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant at the Ministry of Home Affairs Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury has said that action against model Meghna Alam has been taken in accordance with existing laws and no one has been subjected to unlawful treatment during the process.

Baksh made the statement after a meeting of the core committee on law and order at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

“All steps were taken within the framework of the law, and there has been no deviation from legal procedures. This (Special Powers) act is being used. It is not as if this law is not being used, nor is this the only instance in which it has been applied. It is not an illegal act,” Baksh told reporters in response to a question regarding the criticism surrounding Meghna’s detention under the law.

"But if you ask why or what happened in this particular case—a certain incident occurred, a complaint was filed, and work is ongoing regarding this. The matter has gone to the High Court. Once it reaches the High Court, it becomes a sub judice matter. It is not appropriate to comment on sub judice matters. Let us see what comes of it," he added.

Action has been taken under the existing law without any unlawful treatment, he reiterated.

He assured everyone that they will respond to the High Court's inquiry and added that all relevant information will be provided in due time, though it is not appropriate to discuss the matter in advance.

Meghna Alam, a model and chairperson of the Miss Bangladesh Foundation, who also holds the title of Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, was taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) under the Special Powers Act on April 7.

On Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah sent Meghna to jail for 30 days in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.

Later, she was transferred to Kashimpur jail.

Meanwhile, Meghna’s father filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the lower court’s order.
