The High Court has issued a rule asking why the allocation of spaces for street vendors and hawkers on roads and footpaths in Dhaka should not be declared illegal and unlawful.
The court has asked the secretary of the local government division, the law ministry secretary, administrators of both Dhaka city corporations, and others concerned to respond to the rule.
A High Court bench led by Justice Biswajit Debnath issued the order on Tuesday after a preliminary hearing on a related writ petition.
Advocate Md Shoaibuzzaman appeared for the petitioner in court.
Earlier, Advocate Md Shoaibuzzaman filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the Dhaka City Hawker Rehabilitation Policy, 2026, which led to the issuance of the rule.
