A court on Tuesday granted a total of 43 days to question former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun in custody in eight cases filed over the deaths of eight individuals during recent student protests.
Mamun was presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka by police. Following his appearance, the investigating officers requested various durations of remand for a thorough investigation into the cases.
In response, Mamun's lawyer filed for bail, seeking to cancel the remand orders. After hearing arguments from both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza rejected the bail application and approved the remand.
In the case filed with Jatrabari police station over the shooting death of Shakib Hasan during the protests, the court granted a seven-day remand for Mamun. A similar seven-day remand was granted in the case of Imon Hossain Gazi's death.
Additionally, the court approved a five-day remand for Mamun in cases over the deaths of Irfan Bhuiya and Muntasir Rahman, as well as a five-day remand regarding the death of van driver Sujon.
The court also granted a four-day remand in the case over Rofiqul Islam's death and a five-day remand for the case involving 14-year-old Mahmudul Hasan Joy. A five-day remand was also approved in a murder case filed with Newmarket police station.
