No member of the Dhaka Lawyers' Association will represent the accused in the Pallabi child murder case, the Dhaka Bar Association announced the decision on Friday.
On Friday morning, the General Secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, Md Abul Kalam Khan, announced this decision in a Facebook post.
People from various walks of life, including lawyers, have welcomed this decision.
When contacted regarding this matter, Md Abul Kalam Khan told the Dhaka Tribune: "We made this decision during yesterday's (Thursday) executive committee meeting held via Zoom. The decision will be officially published through a formal resolution very soon."
He further added: "The murder of child is a brutal incident. If we stand in defense of such killers, it could lead to a rise in such crimes in society. That is why it has been decided that no member of the Dhaka Lawyers' Association shall stand in court on behalf of the accused in the murder case."
On Tuesday morning, police recovered the headless body of the child from under a bed in a flat in Pallabi, Mirpur, and later recovered her severed head from the bathroom. A murder case was subsequently filed at the Pallabi Police Station regarding the incident.
The police initially detained Shopna Akhter, the wife of the prime suspect, Sohel Rana. Later, the main accused, Sohel Rana, was arrested. Following his arrest, the killer, Sohel Rana, gave a confessional statement in court regarding the rape and murder of the child.
According to police sources, after the child left her house in the morning, the suspect, Sohel Rana, lured her into his room, where he raped and subsequently murdered her. Later, Child's headless body was recovered from under the bed, and her severed head was found inside a bucket in the bathroom.
Although local residents managed to detain the accused's wife, Shopna Akhter, Sohel Rana escaped by cutting through a window grill. He was arrested on Tuesday evening from the Fatullah area of Narayanganj.
