High Court: Ashamed of acts of violence, deaths over protest

‘None of us are following the constitution and the law’

The High Court on Tuesday expressed shame over the acts of violence and deaths that resulted from the quota protest movement, stating that all deaths are tragic.

The High Court bench, consisting of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon, made the statement in a hearing on a writ petition seeking an order not to fire upon quota reform protesters and for the release of six coordinators from DB custody.

During the hearing, the court further said: "Everything is written in the constitution and the law, but none of us are following the constitution and the law."

Barristers Sara Hossain, ZI Khan Panna, Anik R Haque, and Advocate Manzur Al Matin Pritom, among others, represented the petitioners.

On the other hand, Senior Additional Attorney General SM Munir, Additional Attorney General Sheikh Md Morshed, and Additional Attorney General Barrister Md Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury represented the state.

On Monday, the writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking an order not to fire upon quota reform protesters.

The writ also requested the release of six coordinators of the quota movement from DB custody.

Supreme Court lawyers Manzur Al Matin Pritom and Ainunnahar Siddika Lipi filed the writ in the relevant branch of the High Court.

The writ named the cabinet secretary, home ministry secretary, inspector general of police, and chief of army staff, among others, as respondents.

During the quota reform movement, there were incidents of shootings, violence, and arson at various government establishments across the country, resulting in several casualties.

Meanwhile, the Detective Branch (DB) of the police has stated that the quota protesters were taken into custody for their safety.
