The High Court on Wednesday sentenced BNP leader Habibur Rahman Habib to five months' imprisonment for committing contempt of court by making derogatory comments about a judge.
The HC bench of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah delivered the verdict after hearing the statement of Habibur, who was produced before the bench by police of Sher-e-Bangla police station on Wednesday.
The court also fined him Tk2,000.
Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal stood for Habib in the court.
Standing in the courtroom, Habibur Rahman Habib said: “I am ready to donate my liver, kidney and even my life for my beloved mother Begum Khaleda Zia. Even if I get a 100-year sentence in jail, I am not afraid at all.”
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested BNP Chairperson's adviser Habibur Rahman Habib as he failed to appear before the court despite a High Court's order in a contempt of court case.
He was arrested from Dhaka’s Mirpur DOHS area on Tuesday morning, said RAB-2 Senior Assistant Director (Media) ASP Shihab Karim.
A video of Habib's speech circulated on YouTube on October 15 containing derogatory remarks on Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman, the attention of the Supreme Court was drawn to the matter.
After a hearing, the High Court summoned Habib on November 6 to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for contempt of court.
According to court records, a copy of the notice to appear was received by Habib's wife.
However, neither Habib nor any of his representatives appeared in court that day.
The court on the same day asked Deputy Attorney General Qazi Mainul Hasan to get the information from the relevant law enforcement agency and convey it by Wednesday.
