A sub-inspector, who was in jail for raping a woman, was granted bail on Wednesday after he married the woman on the court premises in Panchagarh.

Judge Mehdi Hasan Talukdar of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Panchagarh granted the bail to SI Abdul Jalil of Kurigram Sadar police station.

His first wife was also present during the ceremony held on the premises of Panchagarh District Lawyers' Association office.

According to sources, on April 30, 2020, the woman filed a general diary (GD) at Panchagarh Sadar police station following a land dispute.

Abdul Jalil, the then SI of the same police station, was entrusted with the investigation of the GD. Later, the woman sued Jalil for raping her during the investigation.

The court on January 23 issued an arrest warrant against Jalil in connection with the case. He was later granted bail for six weeks by the High Court.

He appeared before the court last Sunday and filed a bail application. At the end of the hearing, the court rejected his bail plea and sent him to jail.

The woman told journalists that she is happy with the court’s action and that she has got justice.
