Torturing Exim Bank officials: Ron Sikder’s bail extended till April 11

Ron also appeals for exemption of personal appearance in court

Update : 10 Mar 2021, 05:57 PM

A Dhaka court has extended the bail of Sikder Group Managing Director Ron Haque Sikder till April 11.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order on Wednesday.

Ron has also appealed for exemption of personal appearance in court and hopes to be represented by his lawyer.

The court has set the same date for hearing on the petitions, one for the exemption of personal appearance the other for cancellation of bail.

The prosecution had previously appealed for revoking his bail on grounds that Ron and his brother Dipu Haque Sikder abducted, tortured and shot bullets on two Exim Bank officials after they refused to sanction a loan of Tk500 crore.

Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested him in the morning of February 12 from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, shortly after landing here from Dubai to attend his father's funeral. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Asheq Imam granted him bail in the case on the same day.

On May 7 last year, the brothers allegedly tortured and threated to murder Exim’s Managing Director Haider Ali Mia and Additional Managing Director Md Firoz Hossain.

They allegedly shot at the senior bank executives when they refused to overvalue their mortgaged property for a Tk500 crore loan.

The bank started a case on May 19. National Bank Limited, a concern of the Sikder Group, denied the allegations through their lawyer, saying the case was filed to socially defame them.

Ron and Dipu fled to Thailand by an air ambulance on May 25.
