Five yaba smugglers of Cox's Bazar, who surrendered to police last year under a government initiative, walked out of jail after securing bail from the High Court.

Confirming the matter on Saturday, Public Prosecutor of Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge's Court Faridul Alam said that they are currently staying in Teknaf after securing bail from the High Court on September 28.

The five yaba smugglers are: Nurul Huda, 38, and his brother Nurul Kabir, 42, of Pashchim Leda; Mahbub Alam, 36, of Sikdarpara of Hnila union; Monjur Ali, 35, of Sabrang Mundardail; and Md Yunus, 48, of Naittongpara in Teknaf Sadar.

A total of 102 yaba dealers and smugglers including the five officially surrendered to police with 350,000 yaba tablets and 30 firearms in front of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at an event in Teknaf upazila, Cox’s Bazar on February 16, 2019.

Later, the Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge's Court framed charges against 101 of them this year as one yaba dealer died in jail.

Seven family members of former Awami League lawmaker and alleged yaba kingpin Abdur Rahman Bodi were among the yaba dealers who surrendered.

The conditions for the surrender of illegal narcotics dealers were to leave the drug trade forever, and to act as confidential informants. They will have to participate in coordinated initiatives, performing a special role in curbing yaba trade from their own areas.
