The High Court has ordered a probe committee be formed for the gang rape at Sylhet's Murari Chand (MC) college.
According to the court order, the probe committee must be comprised of a judge of the Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, the Sylhet chief metropolitan magistrate, and the deputy commissioner of Sylhet.
The probe committee must submit its report to the registrar general of the Supreme Court within 15 days.
The court also ordered police to provide protection for the members of the committee, and the deputy commissioner’s office to provide any necessary logistical support.
The bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim issued the Suo moto order on Tuesday when Advocate Mohammad Misbah Uddin placed the matter before the court with a newspaper report.
State lawyer Barrister Nawroz MR Chowdhury told Dhaka Tribune the court also issued a rule concerning the incident and expressed frustration with the negligence of college authorities both before and after the rape took place.
The rule asked the government to answer within two weeks why an inquiry into the negligence of the college authorities should not be conducted.

The secretaries of the Education, Law, and Home Ministries, and the vice chancellor and treasurer of the National University, principal of MC college, the deputy commissioner (DC), the superintendent of police (SP) of Sylhet, and the hostel superintendent concerned, have all been made respondents to the rule.
Seven people have been arrested in the case so far, and the whereabouts of Tarek, one of the named accused in the case, remains unknown.
On Monday, a Sylhet court placed three of the suspects on remand: named accused Mahbubur Rahman Rony, suspect Rajon, and Rajon's associate Ainuddin. Police had sought seven day remands for each of them, but the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Saifur Rahman granted five.
Six suspects have now been put on remand in the gang rape case, including four named accused.
The victim was reportedly raped by Chhatra League men on the premises of Sylhet's MC College hostel when she was visiting with her husband on Friday night.
Sources said a group of Chhatra League men confined the woman's husband in a room and took the woman to a car where she was gang raped.
The victim's husband filed a case with Shah Paran police station in connection with the incident. He filed the case against seven or eight people, naming six.
