Court fines model Jakia Moon over illegally imported Porsche

A Dhaka court has fined model Jakia Moon for evading taxes on her Porsche SUV on Monday. The Porsche Cayenne belonging to Jakia was seized by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) on April 6, 2016. The car, which customs officials valued at around Tk3cr, reportedly was imported without paying Tk2.27cr in taxes, as per CIID sources. The court fined Jakia Tk1.5 lakh. The verdict comes after over a year of extensive investigation and judicial process. Two others were prosecuted in the case – Jakia’s husband Shafiul Alam Mohsin, CEO of Pacific Group, and Afzal Ali, a car importer who holds a British citizenship.The Porsche Cayenne was found with a British number plate from Jakia’s Gulshan house. The car was imported from England abusing the carnet de passage privilege, reported CIID officials.
