At the unveiling of the first-ever National Justice Audit, the law minister stressed the importance of reducing case backlogs to restore public trust in the justice system.
Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq noted that there were 3.5 million pending cases.
He said: “The judiciary is heavily burdened by the abnormally high number of around 3.5 million cases. The backlog must be reduced. We want to ensure justice to people. We do not want street justice. Currently, 87% of people have faith in the justice system. If the backlog blossoms to 6.2 million cases after a decade, that trust will plummet to 37%.”
Regarding forming the Narcotics Control and Prevention Tribunal, the minister said: “We will amend the existing laws in the upcoming parliamentary session.”
He admitted the judiciary faces severe logistical problems and said they were moving towards e-judiciary.
