The High Court has granted bail to Barrister Mainul Hosein for six months in 15 cases filed against him over defaming journalist Masuda Bhatti at a television talk show in October 2018.

The High Court bench of Justices Md Rezaul Haque and Zafar Ahmed passed the order on Sunday, after hearing a bail petition filed by Mainul’s lawyers.

Senior lawyer Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, along with advocate Md Masud Rana moved for the bail petition in court.

Later Khandakar Mahbub Hossain said: “The High court granted Mainul bail for six months in 15 defamation cases filed against him. However, trials of three other cases- filed against him on the same charge- are not underway, and thus no need to secure bail in these cases. Now there is no bar to his release.”

On October 16, during a television talk show aired in Ekattor TV the former caretaker government adviser called Masuda Bhatti “characterless.”

Mainul, former advisor of the caretaker government, was picked up a DB team from the residence of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) President ASM Abdul Rab in the capital’s Uttara on October 22.

He was shown arrested in a defamation case filed in Rangpur over his verbal abuse of journalist during a talk show.

Later a bunch of libel cases and cases under the Digital Security Act were filed against Mainul from different places of the country.
