Zia Orphanage Trust Case: ACC appeals seeking increase in Khaleda’s jail term

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed an appeal with the High Court to increase the jail term handed down to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust Case. The appeal was filed Sunday morning, ACC lawyer Khurshed Alam Khan confirmed the matter. He said: "The trial court gave Khaleda Zia inadequate punishment keeping in mind her age, physical condition and social background. "The court concerned will be informed about the appeal on Tuesday."

On February 8, Dhaka’s Fifth Special Judge’s Court convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was then sent to the old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city. It also sentenced five other accused, including Khaleda’s son and BNP’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, to 10 years’ imprisonment and fined them Tk2.1 crore each.This article was first published on banglatribune.com
