The “Jogajog Utshob 2026” and the 2026-28 elections of the Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Alumni Association (DUMCJAA) were held on Friday afternoon at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University.
The event brought together former and current students of the department for a reunion, panel discussions, cultural performances and the alumni association election. Band Warfaze also performed at the event.
As part of the festival, a panel discussion titled "The Farce of Freedom of Speech and Safety in Journalism" was held. Road, Rail and Waterway Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam was the chief guest.
He said: "As a politician, what I see of journalism today reflects a profession that has become both deteriorated and unaccountable. Had graduates from journalism departments actually entered the field, the sorry state journalism finds itself in would not exist."
He added: "It is true that freedom of expression is not without limits — but where exactly should those limits be? Someone has to draw that line."
Prime Minister's Press Secretary Saleh Shibli also spoke at the event. He said routine measles vaccinations had not been administered for five and a half years, which led to the deaths of many children.
He said the government later procured vaccines from abroad and launched a vaccination drive in April, beginning with the most affected areas.
The festival was held to strengthen ties between alumni and current students of the journalism department and to discuss the challenges facing the country's media industry.
