Update : 06 Jun 2014, 02:37 PM

A group of people of a housing company have stormed into the Karwan Bazar branch of Northern University on Friday afternoon.

Five students of the university were injured in the attack.

Injured Polash, Sourav, Riazuddin Adnan, Helal Mahmood, Shakib and Selim were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Of them, Polash and Sourav have been undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care unit of the hospital.

The clash took place after some men of Estate Developers’ Bangladesh (EDB) swooped on some students while trying to grab EDB Trade Center’s 13th and 15th floor around 11am. EDB constructed the building named EDB Trade Center.

Mazharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon police station said they previously heard that the Northern University authority had a feud with the EDB over holding the floors which led the clash.

A student witness from the Law department Adnan Hossain said 40-50 men swooped on them when they were on the 12th floor’s canteen.

“They attacked us with lethal weapons. They had machetes, knives, iron rods and cricket stamps with them,” he said.

Contacted, Registrar of the university, Lt Col (retd) Ekhtedar Ahmed Siddique said they bought some floors from EDB. However, EDB resold those floors to others too.

“Today they came to grab a couple of floors. They vandalised the canteen on the 13th and exam hall on the 14th and the ground floor as we protested,” he claimed.

He also claimed that they had bought the 13th and 15th floor and eight others floors from EDB. However, EDB did not hand over the floors. The university authority had lodged cases which are under trial.

After the clash, police picked up Managing Director of EDB Fazlul Bari along with 23 attackers.
