Elections for reserved women’s seats to be held on May 12

According to the current distribution, the BNP-led alliance is expected to secure 36 seats, the Jamaat-led alliance 13 seats and independent candidates one seat

The election schedule for the reserved women’s seats in the 13th National Parliament will be announced on Wednesday, with voting set to take place on May 12.
   
The decision came from the 11th commission meeting held on Monday at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka. Speaking after the meeting, Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the matter.

“Five agenda items were discussed today. Among them, the commission decided to declare the schedule for the reserved women’s seats election on April 8, 2026, while voting will be held on May 12. The detailed schedule will be announced later,” he said.

Regarding political alignments, Akhtar Ahmed noted that six independent candidates have formed a coalition. He said parties including those led by Zonayed Saki, Nurul Haque Nur, and Andaleeve Rahman Partho are aligned with the BNP, while Jamaat is allied with the NCP and Khelafat Andolon. He also mentioned that Rumeen Farhana has opted not to join any alliance.

According to the current distribution, the BNP-led alliance is expected to secure 36 seats, the Jamaat-led alliance 13 seats, and independent candidates one seat.

It is worth noting that voting for 299 out of 300 general seats in the 13th National Parliament was held on February 12. Polling in Sherpur-3 was suspended following the death of a valid candidate. A by-election will be held in Bogura-6 after Tarique Rahman vacated the seat. Meanwhile, results for Chittagong-2 and Chittagong-4 remain pending due to legal complications.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured 208 seats in parliament, while the National Citizens Party (NCP) has won six seats. Jamaat-e-Islami has obtained 68 seats.

Among other parties, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis has secured two seats, Islami Andolan Bangladesh has won one seat, and Gono Odhikar Parishad has also gained one seat. Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) has secured one seat, while Ganosamhati Andolon has won one seat. Khelafat Majlis has additionally obtained one more seat.Independent candidates have won a total of seven seats.

According to the law, the number of reserved seats for women allocated to each party is determined by multiplying the number of seats won by that party by 50 and then dividing the result by 300. The final figure represents the number of reserved seats for women assigned to the respective party.
