Four killed in Jamalpur road accident

Four others, including a child, were injured and sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital

Four people, including two women, were killed and four others, including a child, were injured in a road accident in Jamalpur on Monday at noon.

The accident took place in front of the Jamalpur Economic Zone on the Jamalpur–Tangail highway in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.

The deceased were identified as Rashed, 30, son of Haidar Ali from Sanakoir area of Sarishabari Upazila; Arifa Akter Polly, 28, wife of Sharif Ahmed from Uchhogram area of the same upazila; Chan Mia, 62, son of late Moyez Uddin from Narayanpur area of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila; and an unidentified woman.

According to residents, the accident occurred when a Jamalpur-bound battery-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a Digpait-bound covered van coming from Jamalpur. Passenger Rashed died on the spot.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Jamalpur General Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared Arifa Akter Polly and another unidentified woman dead. Later, another injured person named Chan Mia died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

As their condition was critical, four injured people, including a child, were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

The injured were identified as Arsh, 7, son of deceased Arifa Akter Polly from Uchhogram area of Sarishabari Upazila; Jahangir Alam, 40, the auto-rickshaw driver from Kastasinga village of Jamalpur Sadar Upazila; Sadiqa Akter, 25, from Digpait area; and Sandhya Begum, 50, from Narayanpur area.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, Nazmus Sakib, said four people were killed in the head-on collision between a covered van and an auto-rickshaw. One person died on the spot, two women on the way to the hospital, and another while receiving treatment.

After the accident, the covered van fled the scene. Later, locals captured the vehicle in the Digpait area, but the driver managed to escape.

The OC said the bodies of the deceased have been recovered, and the covered van has been seized. Legal action regarding the incident is underway.
