Jahangirnagar University (JU) expelled 289 university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members for their alleged involvement in student attacks during the anti-discrimination student movement in last year's July and August.
However, their identities have not been disclosed yet.
Additionally, nine teachers have been suspended for allegedly instigating the attacks.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan announced the decision early Monday after a syndicate meeting that lasted nearly 15 hours, starting at 11:30am the previous day in the university’s new administrative building.
According to sources, disciplinary actions against the accused students fall into three categories:
- Current students have been temporarily expelled.
- Students who have completed their exams will have their results withheld.
- Former students will have their certificates suspended.
"A further investigation committee has been formed," the vice-chancellor said.
"For those who have already graduated, their certificates will be withheld, those who have completed exams and vivas will not receive their results, and current students will be expelled."
Nine teachers suspended
Nine teachers have been suspended for allegedly aiding the attacks on protesting students.
"These suspensions are based on allegations of involvement in the attacks by Chhatra League and police," the vice-chancellor said.
"Initial investigations have also implicated several other teachers. A structured committee has been formed to gather more evidence,” he added.
Additionally, sources confirmed that 10 more teachers are under investigation. Six faculty-based committees have been formed to examine their roles.
The suspended teachers are: Former proctor Professor Alamgir Kabir, Associate Professor Firoz-ul-Hasan, former dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Bashir Ahmed, former provost of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Professor Israfil Ahmed, Sheikh Russell Hall Provost Tajuddin Shikder, Professor Nazmul Hasan Talukder (Bangla Department), former Pro VC (Education) Mohammad Mostafa Firoz, Associate Professor Hosne Ara Baby (History Department), and Assistant Professor Mehedi Iqbal (Geography and Environment Department).
Additionally, pension benefits for former vice-chancellor Professor Md Nurul Alam and former registrar Abu Hasan have been revoked.
Two university officials and a staff member have also been dismissed: Nahidur Rahman Khan, Rajib Chowdhury, and hall attendant Mohsin.
Hall name changes
The university has also decided to rename several buildings named after members of the Sheikh family.
As per the decision, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Sheikh Russell Hall, Sheikh Hasina Hall and Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall will be renamed.
Additionally, the night of July 15 has been declared "Black Night" at JU.
