This was confirmed by Salam Hossain, the commercial branch manager of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at the Aricha office.
On Tuesday, ferry services resumed at around 8:45am. Earlier, at 6:30am, ferry operations were temporarily suspended to avoid accidents caused by dense fog on the river. As a result, over 100 vehicles were stranded on both sides of the ferry terminals.
BIWTC official Salam Hossain said: "This morning (Tuesday), dense fog began forming in the river area. As a result, the light from the ferries’ marking lamps became unclear. To prevent any major accidents on the river, ferry operations on the Paturia-Daulatdia route were temporarily suspended."
He further mentioned that ferry services resumed at around 8:30am as the fog started to clear. Of the 16 ferries of various sizes operating on the route, 9 were used to transport the waiting vehicles, according to him.
Sources at the ferry terminals indicated that on Monday night, heavy fog blanketed the Paturia-Daulatdia route of the Padma River. During that time, ferry operations continued cautiously. However, early Tuesday morning, the fog intensified, causing the light from the ferries’ marking lamps to become indistinct.
Consequently, a ferry carrying passengers and vehicles became stranded in the middle of the Padma River. Later, at around 6:30am, ferry services were temporarily halted to prevent accidents.
