Update : 10 Dec 2023, 12:09 PM

The movement of ferries resumed on Paturia-Daulatdia, Aricha-Kazirhat and Dhawapara-Nazirganj routes on Sunday morning after eight and half hours of disruption.

The ferry operation came to a halt around 1am after visibility was hampered due to dense fog.

As the fog disappeared, the ferry service returned to normal at 9:30am.

Shah Mohammad Khaled Newaz, deputy general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transportation Corporation (BIWTC) Aricha office, confirmed the matter.

Five small ferries were anchored in the middle of the Padma River with vehicles due to the suspension of ferry movement for over eight hours.

About 300 vehicles got stuck in three waterways.

Passengers, drivers and assistants of the vehicles plying the waterway also suffered in the cold weather.

According to the BIWTC authorities, heavy fog started disrupting the routes' visibility on Saturday night. As it came to the point when the marking lights became blurry, the authorities decided to suspend the services temporarily from 1am to avoid any accidents.

Md Shahid, a truck driver, said that he came from Dhaka to the Paturia terminal at around 2am and was waiting in the cold weather.

Mohammad Farooq Hossain, a bus driver, said he came to the Paturia terminal at around 11pm. There are many women, children and elderly passengers on his bus who suffered extremely amid bone-chilling weather.

BIWTC official Khaled Newaz said that 27 ferries operate on these waterways.
