'A group of terrorists, under the guise of students, tried to disrupt law and order through an illegal gathering'

Update : 25 Nov 2024, 06:12 PM

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Wari Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Md Saleh Uddin, has said that the attackers on Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College (DRMC) in Matuial, Jatrabari, Dhaka, will be brought under the law within 24 hours.

He made the statement while speaking to the media in front of the college around 4:15pm on Monday.

Earlier, he had visited the college with members of the army and discussed the incident with the college authorities.

DC Md Saleh Uddin said: "We will not call this an accident. A group of terrorists, under the guise of students, tried to disrupt law and order through an illegal gathering. They attacked Dr Mahbubur Rahman Molla College in an organized manner. Our limited police force tried to stop them at Jatrabari Chowrasta, but they ignored our obstacles and attacked the college with sticks and weapons."

He further said: "We entered the college with army personnel and inspected various rooms on different floors. There was destruction inside the college, with millions of taka worth of property looted, which is highly condemnable. We suspect that a vested interest group is involved in this incident."

With a stern warning, the police official added:  "We will not tolerate any such incidents in the future. Those involved in this attack will be brought under the law within 24 hours. A case will be filed, and you (the locals) will cooperate in the subsequent legal procedures."

Earlier, at around 12pm on Monday, there was a clash between students of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College and students of Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College. The situation quickly escalated, turning the Jatrabari-Demra road into a battlefield.

At least fifty students were injured in the three-hour-long clash, with 30 of them receiving treatment at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

To control the situation, several hundred members of the army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), APnN, and police were deployed.

By 3pm, students from the colleges, along with local residents and curious onlookers, were gathered in front of DRMC. After that, students from the Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College were no longer seen.

Earlier, around 10am, students from different departments of Suhrawardy College gathered in the campus with sticks.

They later marched to the front of Kabi Nazrul College. When the principal of Nazrul College urged them to calm down through the microphone, the students started chanting "Fake, fake."

They then continued their protest march and attacked DRMC, leading to a confrontation with the college’s students.

The incident follows a protest program on Sunday in response to the death of DRMC student Abhijit in the National Medical College of Old Dhaka.

During this program, students from DRMC and several other colleges carried out large-scale vandalizm at the National Medical College and nearby Suhrawardy College.

As a result, the honors first-year exams at Suhrawardy College were postponed.
