It is suspected that the explosives are from the time of Liberation War

Update : 18 Nov 2024, 07:05 PM

Police on Sunday recovered six hand grenades, nine magazines, and 726 rounds of ammunition from an abandoned spot in the Banani DOHS in Dhaka.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s Cantonment Police recovered the items, while the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit defused the hand grenades.

The explosives were discovered at around 7:30pm near the lakeside on Road 5 of Banani DOHS.

Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Media and Public Relations Department, Talebur Rahman, said the items were rusted and abandoned on a paved road on the western side of the lakeside.

Upon receiving the information, a team from Cantonment Police quickly reached the spot, secured the items, and informed the CTTC's bomb disposal unit.

A specialist team from the bomb disposal unit arrived at the location around 9:30pm and deemed the grenades highly dangerous. He added that they safely defused them in the public interest by 10pm.

It is suspected that the recovered hand grenades, which are of military-grade quality, were used during the Liberation War of 1971.

Legal proceedings regarding the recovered hand grenades, magazines, and ammunition are underway.
