75 students of CMCH expelled over various charges

Additionally, 11 students and their guardians will have to submit a written pledge

Update : 28 Oct 2024, 07:23 PM

Seventy-five students from Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) have been expelled for  various durations due to several offenses.

The Academic Council decided on these disciplinary actions during a meeting, citing reasons such as illegal entry into the dormitory, room occupation, physical assault, and involvement in politics despite being prohibited.

The expulsion orders, ranging from six months to two years, were announced in a notification on Monday.

Additionally, 11 students and their guardians will have to submit a written pledge.

Most of those punished are leaders, activists, and supporters of the recently banned student organization, Chhatra League. They are known to be followers of local Awami League General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin and former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury.

The punishments will be effective immediately, as stated in the notification.

This decision follows a meeting of the Academic Council held on Sunday, which reviewed the cases of 86 students.

The meeting was chaired by CMCH Principal Professor Mohammad Jashim Uddin.

The notification bears the signatures of Principal Jashim Uddin and Brigadier General Mohammad Tasleem Uddin, Director of CMCh.

For the 86 students, actions will be taken by the hospital authorities regarding those who have already passed the MBBS and are currently interning, including 17 BDS students.

Confirming the matter, Brigadier General Mohammad Tasleem Uddin stated that 14 of those punished are interns, and the hospital authorities will enforce their penalties.

The Academic Council approved these disciplinary measures based on recommendations from a 12-member investigation committee.

After the mass uprising in July-August, the CMCH authorities formed an investigation committee on September 11, led by Professor Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, head of the Neurology Department.

The committee conducted investigations for over a month into the allegations against the accused, which were raised by other students. Despite the ban on student politics during the Awami League era, the investigation addressed various complaints including illegal entry into the dormitory and room occupation.

Among the punished students, seven had previously received disciplinary actions from the Academic Council in March 2023. They have now been subjected to additional penalties alongside the previous ones.

Of the 86 students, seven were expelled for two years, 15 for one and a half years, 39 for one year, and 14 for six months. Written pledges will be obtained from 11 individuals and their guardians.
