A new committee named the "Democratic Rights Committee" has been formed, bringing together a diverse group of distinguished citizens and professionals from various fields.
This initiative aims to address and advocate for democratic rights and freedoms across the country.
The meeting was chaired by Professor Anu Muhammad, a prominent academic and activist.
Under his leadership, the gathering included a wide range of participants, including students, teachers, and other notable figures from different professions.
The session was conducted by Professor Dr Harun-or-Rashid.
Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury delivered a key speech outlining the committee’s objectives and the urgency of its mission.
The discussion focused on the actions to be taken following a mass uprising.
It was noted that after each uprising, fascism had been reestablished, rendering the sacrifices made in vain. This time, such a failure must not be allowed.
Therefore, a unified platform of all forces participating in the democratic movement is essential.
To this end, a committee was formed with Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury as the convener.
There was a discussion about what to do after the mass uprising.
It was emphasized that past uprisings have failed to prevent the resurgence of fascism, leading to the loss of hard-won gains and the undermining of democratic progress.
The committee recognizes that to prevent such failures in the future, a unified and cohesive platform of democratic forces is essential.
Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury was appointed as the convener of the committee.
The joint conveners include several prominent figures: Professor Dr Harun-or-Rashid, Abdullah Kafi Ratan, Professor Tanjimuddin Khan, Seema Dutta, Samina Lutfa Nitra, Maha Mirza, and Engineer Kallol Mustafa.
Additionally, the committee includes influential members such as Professor Anu Muhammad, Professor Salimullah Khan, Professor Akmal Hossain, Professor Mamun Al Rashid, Professor Mohammad Azam, Mosahida Sultana Ritu, Dr Snigdha Rezwana, and journalist Abu Saeed Khan.
The primary goals of the committee are to oppose any actions that threaten democratic rights and freedom of expression.
The committee is committed to ensuring the protection of democratic rights and freedom of speech for all citizens, both in urban and rural areas. It also seeks to abolish repressive and anti-people laws, uphold the independence of the judiciary, protect the rights of workers and farmers, ensure democratic campus environments free from occupation, and address all forms of democratic demands.
Through these efforts, the committee aims to foster a more equitable and democratic society, standing firm against any threats to these fundamental principles.
