Two police officers have been suspended following the killing of Abu Sayed, a student at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, during unrest related to the quota reform protests on July 16.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman confirmed that Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy have been suspended and attached to the police lines.
However, teachers and students at BRUR have expressed concerns that no action has been taken against Assistant Commissioner of Police Arif Hossain and another officer named Imran, who were reportedly present at the scene of the shooting.
In this regard, Dr Tuhin Wadud, a teacher at BRUR, said that suspending those who carried out the shooting does not remove the responsibility from others who were involved. “Those who ordered the shooting should also be held accountable.”
A Rangpur court on Thursday granted bail to a 16-year-old boy in a murder case filed over the killing of Abu Sayed.
The 11th-grader of Rangpur Police Lines School and College was arrested on July 16. He was later accused of the murder of Abu Sayed on July 17.
On July 16, protesters marched five kilometres through the city to Begum Rokeya University, with Sayed joining them.
Clashes erupted with quota supporters, and police fired rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Despite the chaos, Sayed stood firm, refusing to budge. At one point, he was shot in the chest and fell to the ground.
He was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
