A mutation and certificate assistant at the Tanore Upazila Land Office in Rajshahi has been temporarily suspended after a video allegedly showing him taking a bribe went viral on social media.
Imrul Kashem Emon was suspended through an order signed by Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam on Wednesday, August 27.
The action followed a preliminary investigation into specific complaints from service recipients and a television report concerning an alleged bribery transaction, sources said.
The investigation found evidence supporting allegations of irregularities and corruption against Emon, prompting the authorities to take disciplinary action, the sources said.
According to the sources, Emon had long faced allegations of taking bribes from members of the public and harassing them while providing mutation and miscellaneous certificate-related services.
A copy of the suspension order was sent to officials of the relevant departments. The assistant commissioner (land) of Tanore was also instructed to prepare a statement of allegations against Emon and submit the relevant details to the Deputy Commissioner's Office.
Local service recipients welcomed the suspension and called for corruption-free land services.
Residents alleged that they had long faced harassment and demands for bribes while seeking various services from the land office. They called for a proper investigation into the allegations against Emon and greater transparency in service delivery.
Tanore Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shib Shankar Basak said: “My office's mutation and certificate assistant, Imrul Kashem Emon, has been suspended by the Deputy Commissioner. Necessary action will be taken against him in accordance with the rules.”
