A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man died reportedly after suffering a head injury while rushing down stairs amid a missile alert in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Saurav Islam, son of Amir Islam of Musapur village under Raipura upazila in Narsingdi.

According to his family members, Saurav was on the rooftop of the house where he lived in Jeddah.

Panic gripped him after seeing a missile reportedly approaching the city from Yemen on his mobile phone, and he hurriedly tried to come down the stairs.

At one stage, a rope reportedly got entangled around one of his feet, causing him to fall and suffer a severe head injury. He bled profusely.

His co-workers later found him lying in a pool of blood after waking up in the morning.

Local police recovered the body, and legal proceedings are underway, Bangladeshi expatriates said.

Saurav had been working as a tea boy at a bank in Jeddah for about five years, according to his relatives.

The family came to know about his death in the afternoon when one of his co-workers in Saudi Arabia contacted them over the phone.

Saurav was the only son of his parents. His mother, Renu Begum, has reportedly been fainting since learning of his death.

The parents said they want to see their son one last time and bury him with their own hands. They appealed to the government to take steps to bring Saurav’s body back to Bangladesh as soon as possible.

The sudden death has cast a pall of grief over the village.

Raipura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Masud Rana said he heard about the incident, but no one has contacted the administration yet. “If they contact us, necessary assistance will be provided,” he said.
