The protesting university teachers, who met Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday, said the meeting was satisfactory.

The meeting was held over the current strike enforced by the public university teachers -- leading to the suspension of classes and examinations.

The meeting began at 11am at Awami League’s Dhanmondi office.

After the meeting, Bangladesh Teachers' Federation Secretary General Prof Dr Nizamul Hoque Bhuiyan told reporters: "The discussion was satisfactory."

However, he did not immediately announce any decision that was taken during the meeting. "We will make a decision after talking to our federation.”

Asked why the pension scheme was discussed at the Awami League office, Prof Dr Nizamul Hoque said: "At the direction of the prime minister, the ministers of the government, along with Oabidul Quader sat with us.”

Public university teachers have been protesting for the past two months, demanding the cancellation of the universal pension scheme "Prottoy".

They argue that this issue affects their livelihoods and believe that implementing the scheme will pose further challenges to higher education, including exacerbating "brain drain".
