A Comilla court on Tuesday sent Jagannath University teacher Din Islam, relieved from the post of assistant proctor by the university, to jail after the completion of his one-day remand in a case over the death of law department student Fairuz Abontika reportedly by suicide.
Judge of Comilla Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Abu Bakar Siddique passed the order when the accused was produced before the court after remand.
On Monday, a Comilla court placed Jagannath University’s suspended student Raihan Siddique Amman and teacher Din Islam on a two and one-day remand, respectively, in the case.
The court also ordered the investigating officer to submit a report within seven days.
Abontika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year, reportedly hanged herself at her Comilla residence after accusing classmate Amman and teacher Din Islam in a Facebook post at around 10pm on Friday.
In the post, Abontika said Amman Siddique and Din Islam would be responsible for her suicide.
Hours after her death, massive protests broke out and have continued, demanding justice for the student.
In the face of the student movement, the university authorities were compelled to relieve the assistant proctor of his duties and suspend the student to assuage the protesters.
Besides, the university administration formed a four-member probe committee.
Members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the teacher and student in Dhaka on Saturday night.
