The newly-appointed Religious Affairs Minister Faridul Haque Khan, elected from the Jamalpur-2 seat as an Awami League candidate in the 12th national parliamentary election that took place on Sunday, has been sent a show cause notice for casting his ballot openly.
The Election Commission issued the show-cause notice on Thursday.
He was asked to explain his actions to the Election Commission on January 15.
Following his appointment in 2020, Faridul Haque has been working as the state minister of religious affairs.
He has been appointed as a minister in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's new cabinet.
He recently broke the law by casting his vote openly.
According to section 83 of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), open voting is illegal.
According to the provision, any candidate who shows up at a polling place and fails to protect the confidentiality of the voting process faces a maximum sentence of five years in jail, with a minimum sentence of one year.
