The Department of Media and Mass Communication at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) organized JMAS Seminar Series II titled “Collaborating with AI in Film and Animation: A Professional's Guide” on Thursday.

The webinar, hosted on the virtual platform Zoom, explored the dynamic fusion of AI and the fields of Film and Animation, offering professionals valuable insights and practical guidance.

Distinguished speakers Joseph Desmond Cruel, head of Technical Services, Training and Research at ABS-CBN Film Productions Inc (Star Cinema), Philippines, and Hendrick Gonzales, art director, and animation designer, Philippines, shared their expertise and experiences.

Prof Dr Md Abdur Rahman, pro-vice chancellor of AIUB, was present as the chief guest and special guests included Prof Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, advisor, Department of MMC, AIUB.

Mohammad Masud Chowdhury, head of the Department, MMC, AIUB welcomed everyone to the webinar.

AIUB Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Md Abdur Rahman in his speech as chief guest, expressed optimism about the transformative power of AI in the current global landscape.

He emphasized that rather than fearing job displacement, AI would make the world more interesting.

Prof Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, advisor, Department of MMC, AIUB, echoed this sentiment as a special guest.

He underscored the prospect of collaboration with AI leading to positive advancements rather than job replacements.

Taking the virtual stage, Hendrick Gonzales, art director, and animation designer, Philippines, delivered an insightful presentation. Concentrating on animation, Gonzales emphasized viewing AI as a tool—a powerful and time-saving one at that. He stressed the importance of ethical and responsible AI use, urging creators to acknowledge AI's contribution to collaborative projects.

Joseph Desmond Cruel, head of Technical Services, Training and Research at ABS-CBN Film Productions Inc, Philippines, provided a comprehensive overview of the current applications of AI in film and animation.

Cruel predicted the emergence of new roles and responsibilities for filmmakers, acknowledging that while AI might replace repetitive tasks, it would simultaneously create additional opportunities. To remain future-proof, Cruel advised students to develop soft skills that AI cannot be replaced and emphasized the importance of acquiring AI skills.

The webinar was moderated by Rani Ellen V Ramos, lecturer, the Department of MMC, AIUB.

Participants included heads of other Departments of AIUB, Faculty members and students of AIUB.
