Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said open-air events would not be allowed on December 31 night to celebrate the New Year.
He said these after a meeting on law and order on the occasion of Christmas and 31st Night celebration at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
He said: “Law enforcement agencies will operate under a four-tier security arrangement across the entire country, including Dhaka. No events will be allowed in open spaces after 6pm, focusing on New Year's Eve. This security measure has been taken in preparation for the January 7 election. Those who wish to organize events will need to do so indoors. Outdoor programs will not be permitted.
“Special security measures have been implemented for Christmas and New Year's Eve. No events will be allowed in open spaces. Bars will be closed on those days, and lanterns cannot be flown away. There will be police checkpoints at all intersections after 6pm, and motorcycle riding will not be permitted. Racing motorcycles is also prohibited. On these days, security forces will be active to prevent drug abuse. All bars will remain closed on New Year's Eve,” he added.
The minister also said that arrangements will be made to strengthen the security of the churches from December 24 to 26. Surveillance and security will also be increased in the diplomatic area from December 25 to 31. Measures will be taken to control any untoward situation.
The minister urged people to call the National Emergency Service 999 in case of any problem.
