The president and general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League visited the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters on Monday over the torture of two leaders of the ruling party’s student wing at Shahbagh police station in Dhaka.
Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan met with DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq at around 12pm.
After coming out of the meeting, Hussain said: "This tragic incident has caused bleeding in the hearts of all the leaders and activists of Chhatra League. We held a meeting with the home minister yesterday (Sunday) and the DMP commissioner today (Monday) to ensure that the legal process against those responsible is followed.”
He added that the DMP chief assured them that the perpetrators would be punished appropriately.
Asked if any case will be filed in this regard, the Chhatra League president said: "We want to have faith in the departmental system of the DMP.”
Additional Deputy Commissioner Harun or Rashid of DMP’s Ramna Division was transferred to the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) on Sunday.
The new posting order of the Police Headquarters mentioned that ADC Harun must hand over his present charge to join his new workplace by Tuesday. Otherwise, he will face a stand release from September 13.
Earlier, he was withdrawn from his post and reassigned to the DMP's Public Order Management Division on Sunday, following allegations of his involvement in the assault of two leaders belonging to the Central Committee of the Chhatra League.
According to reports, the incident occurred when ADC Harun took the two Chhatra League leaders to the Shahbagh police station on Saturday.
The duo are Anwar Hossain Nayeem, Chhatra League central organizing secretary and president of the Dhaka University (DU) Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall unit, and Sharif Ahmed Munim, the central science affairs secretary and general secretary of DU Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall unit.
