Update : 11 Sep 2023, 06:11 PM

French President Emmanuel Macron paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi 32 around 8am on Monday.

“I wanted to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who dedicated his life to the fight for the independence of his nation, its language, its culture, and for the people of Bangladesh," he wrote in the visitors' book in the French language.

"Surrounded by his family, in memory of those who fell alongside him, I want to express here the respect and friendship of the French people," the president wrote after an hour-long visit to the Museum.

This is the building where Bangabandhu was killed, along with most of his family members, on the fateful night of August 15, 1975.

His two daughters – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana – survived as they were abroad then.

Sheikh Rehana and her son Radwan Mujib Siddiq received the president and guided him inside the museum.

Macron listened to the ordeals centring on the darkest hour in South Asia when Bangabandhu and 19 of his family members were gunned down.

“A pall of gloom descended on the visitors as grisly memories of the gruesome killing spree unleashed on that house gripped them while looking at photos of the simple lifestyle of Bangabandhu and his family members,” an official, who was present during the visit, told Dhaka Tribune.

In between the visit, the French president also watched a hologram on the country’s founding father.

Macron arrived in Dhaka on Sunday night and left around 3pm on Monday.

This was the first visit of a French president since 1990 and followed the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Paris in November 2021.
