The interim government has officially canceled the "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Peace Award".
The decision was made during a meeting of the Advisory Council, presided over by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.
Although the policy for the award was finalized during the tenure of the previous Awami League government, no recipient had been selected or honored with the award.
On May 20, 2024, the former government granted final approval for the "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Peace Award" policy, intending to recognize individuals who made significant contributions to global peace.
However, despite the approval, no awards had been conferred.
Merely 10 months after the policy’s enactment, the interim government has now revoked it.
According to the policy, the Awami League government planned to present the award after every two year (biennially).
The selected individual or institution was to receive $100,000, an 18-carat gold medal weighing 50 grams and a certificate of recognition.
The award aimed to honor individuals or organizations worldwide who contributed to peacebuilding, hunger and poverty eradication and conflict resolution.
