Awami League politician and former religious affairs minister Motiur Rahman died Sunday night due to old-age complications. He was 81 years old.
Mymensingh district Awami League General Secretary Moazzem Hossain Babul confirmed the information to Bangla Tribune.
It is learnt that he was suffering from various diseases related to old age for a long time.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin has expressed profound shock at the death of former religious affairs minister and freedom fighter Motiur Rahman.
In a condolence message on Monday, the president said that the nation will forever remember Motiur Rahman's contributions to the Liberation War and education sector.
He also said that the country suffered an irreparable loss at the death of the Ekushey Padak awardee.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief and sorrow over his death. In a condolence message, the prime minister said Motiur Rahman was a devoted leader of Awami League.
“He fulfilled all his responsibilities following the footsteps of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He led the Mymensingh district Awami League for more than three decades and served as a trainer and successful organizer of the freedom fighters during the Liberation War,” she added.
The prime minister also said that he received the Ekushey Padak in 2022 for his outstanding contribution in the Liberation War.
The president and prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Mymensingh was declared free on December 10, 1971 under the leadership of Motiur Rahman. He served as the general secretary and president of Mymensingh district Awami League for a long time.
He served as minister of religious affairs in technocrat quota during 2014-18 during the Awami League government. Before that, he was elected member of National Parliament from Mymensingh-4 (Sadar) constituency in 1986 and 2008.
Motiur Rahman received Bangabandhu Padak in 2000 and Ekushey Padak in 2022 for his contribution to Awami League politics.
Leaders and activists of various political, social and cultural organizations rushed to the hospital on the news of the death of this veteran leader. The family has not yet announced when the burial will take place.
