Adv Yusuf Hossain Humayun passes away

He actively participated in the Liberation War as a student leader, providing leadership in different fronts in Barisal and Dhaka

Former Member of Parliament for Bhola-2 (Borhanuddin-Daulatkhan) and former presidium member of the banned Awami League Adv Yusuf Hossain Humayun has died. He was 88.

The veteran politician breathed his last at around 6:00pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka, according to senior Supreme Court lawyer Md Motahar Hossain Saju.

Family sources said that Humayun’s namaz-e-janaza would be held on the Supreme Court premises after the Zuhr prayers on Sunday. He would later be buried at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in the capital.

Yusuf Hossain Humayun served as former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and former vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council. He also held multiple terms as president of the Bar Association of Barisal District.

The eminent Awami League leader was elected Member of Parliament in the country’s first general election in 1973 as a candidate from the then Bakerganj-4 constituency.

Born on November 14, 1936 in Bhola Sadar upazila, Humayun was a close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He actively participated in the Liberation War as a student leader, providing leadership in different fronts in Barisal and Dhaka.

Humayun completed his matriculation from Dhaka Zilla School in 1954, higher secondary education from BM College, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Political Science as well as an LLB from the University of Dhaka.

During his student life, he served as general secretary of the Dhaka University Chhatra League. He began his legal career in 1966 and was enrolled as an advocate of the High Court Division in 1969. He also served as convener of the Awami Lawyers’ Council aligned with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
