Dhaka North Awami League has called off its peace rally scheduled for Monday in Dhaka Agargaon, deciding instead to hold protest marches in every thana in the area.
Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, president of the unit, confirmed the matter on Sunday.
“The rally was supposed to take place at Dhaka's old trade fair ground on Monday, but the ground is not suitable for use.”
So instead of rallying, the party had decided to hold protest marches, he added. “They will be held today (Sunday) and Monday.”
Dhaka North Awami League Office Secretary William Praloy Samddar Bappi said Monday's peace rally had been cancelled on the instructions of party higher-ups.
“However, our leaders and activists will be on alert on the ground,” he added.
