The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has given permission to both the ruling Awami League and the BNP to hold rallies at the south plaza of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and Naya Paltan, respectively, in Dhaka on Friday.

Both parties have been allowed to hold rallies at their preferred venue on 23 conditions, DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

The BNP was asked to limit their rally from Kakrail's Nightingale crossing to Rajarbagh Police Hospital and the Awami League's associate bodies were asked to restrict their rally from Mahanagar Natya Manch to Muktangan, he said.

Urging the supporters of both parties not to carry any stick, bamboo and bag in the rallies, he said anti-state speech will not be allowed.

Thanking both political parties, the DMP chief said the Awami League and the BNP deferred their rallies to Friday from Thursday considering public suffering.

However, as the two major parties have programs, strict security measures have been enforced, said Golam Faruq.

THe Police, RAB, BGB and Ansar personnel will be deployed around the rally venues, he said.

The conditions include limiting the rallies to the designated spaces, not gathering on the streets or sidewalks outside of the approved places, concluding the rallies within the allotted time, not giving anti-state or provocative speeches and not carrying sticks or rods in the name of carrying banners or festoons.

The Awami League's associate organizations – Jubo League, Swechhasebak League and Chhatra League – on Thursday decided to hold their rally at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, instead of the old trade fair ground in Agargaon.

The rally cannot be held at the old trade fair ground as there is a scheduled program of the president at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) next to the ground, said Afzalur Rahman Babu, general secretary of Swechchasebak League.

Three wings of the ruling party had originally planned to hold the rally at the southwest gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 11am on Thursday. When they were denied permission by the DMP, they attempted to shift the rally to the Dhaka University Gymnasium but could not get permission there either.

Meanwhile, the BNP had initially sought permission to hold a rally at either Naya Paltan or Suhrawardy Udyan on Thursday to press home its demand for the next parliamentary election to be held under a neutral government. However, the DMP commissioner advised them to hold the rally at the Golapbagh ground. Subsequently, the BNP announced that it will hold a rally at Naya Paltan on Friday following a party meeting.
