Jhalakathi launch fire: Victims’ family starts another case
Case filed with Jhalakati police accuses 20, including the owners and operators of the vessel

Another case has been filed over the fire on a launch in Sugandha river near Jhalakathi, which has claimed at least 43 people.
Monir Hossain, who lost family members in the tragedy, filed a case with Jhalakathi Police, Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam Shohag confirmed.
As many as twenty people, including the owners of the vessel, have been accused in the case.
Launch Masters Md Reaz Sikder and Md Khalil, Sarengs Md Masom and Kalam, Supervisor Md Anwar, Sukani Ahsan and Kerani (clerk) Md Kamrul have also been named.
According to the case documents, Monir said that negligence has pushed his family members and others towards death and demanded justice.
Government agencies have so far unearthed several irregularities in the launch that was operating without any fire safety systems in place.
Not only was the engine changed without authorisation, three of the four master-drivers of the launch did not have permission.
Three more cases have already been filed over the matter. On Saturday, one Jahangir Hossain filed a case of unnatural death while one Nazmul Islam Nasi filed another case with Barguna court.
Moreover, the Department of Shipping has filed another case with the Naval Court after which police arrested one of the owners of the launch Ham Jalal Sheikh on Monday.
On Tuesday, another body was found floating on the Sugandha River.
The deadly fire originated in the engine room of MV Obhijan 10 in the middle of the river off the coast of Jhalakathi Sadar upazila on Friday
The blaze broke out at 3am on the Barguna-bound vessel carrying around 1,000 passengers – much higher than its actual capacity – from Dhaka and it engulfed the entire launch within 10 minutes.
