Prime accused Babu confesses over journo Nadim murder

He was sent to jail after the court recorded his statement

Suspended Union Parishad chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu, the prime accused in the case filed over the killing of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim, gave a confessional statement before a Jamalpur court.

He was produced before the court of Jamalpur Judicial Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias after his five-day remand on Friday. 

Arman Ali, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch (DB) of Jamalpur police, also the investigation officer of the case, and advocate Md Yusuf Ali, lawyer of the plaintiff, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

 Mahmudul Alam Babu's statement was recorded under Section 164 of The Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

He was sent to jail after the court recorded his statement.

On Thursday, two accused -- Moniruzzaman Monir, 35, and Reazul, 26 – confessed to Judge Tanveer Ahmed at the Senior Judicial Magistrate's court.

A case was lodged against 47 people naming now-suspended Sadhurpara union parishad (UP) chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu as the key accused in connection with Nadim's murder.

A total of 13 people were arrested and sent to the court in connection with the murder of the journalist, the court granted them remand for different periods from Sunday to Friday. 

After the remands ended on Friday, the court ordered all the accused to be sent to jail, said the lawyer. 

Meanwhile, Fahim Faisal Rifat, number two accused in the case and the chairman's son, has not been arrested by law enforcement agencies yet.

Nadim, who had been seriously injured in an attack allegedly by some supporters of Babu in the Pathati area of Bokshiganj upazila on June 14, died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital the next day.

He was the Jamalpur correspondent for and a Bokshiganj upazila correspondent for Ekattor Television. He was also a member of the Jamalpur Press Club.
