The ruling Awami League on Monday launched processions and rallies across the country to demand the arrest of Rajshahi district unit BNP Convenor Abu Sayeed for his death threat to Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina.
Police said they are conducting raids to arrest the BNP leader in a case filed on Sunday.
The Dhaka City South Awami League led a procession from the AL central office at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue. Dhaka South AL President Abu Ahmed Mannafi addressed the rally, among others.
The Awami Secchasebok League also held its protest at the AL central office.
Meanwhile, Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud was the chief guest at a demonstration and rally organized by Dhaka North Awami League in the Mohammadpur area of the capital. Dhaka North AL President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman presided over the rally.
Jubo League leaders and activists arranged a sit-in and protest march at the central Shaheed Minar in the capital, while the Bangladesh Chhatra League held their rally in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University.
The Chhatra League rally was addressed by Chhatra League central President Hussain Saddam and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif, among others.
Similar programs were arranged by all district units of the Awami League and its associate bodies.
On Sunday, a video of a speech delivered by BNP leader Abu Sayeed went viral on social media. At one point in the speech, he had said that BNP's only demand was to “send Sheikh Hasina to the grave.”
“We will do everything needed to force her to resign, InshaAllah,” Abu Sayeed further said.
The High Court on Monday asked the authorities concerned whether Abu Sayeed was arrested yet.
The court also wanted to know the latest action taken by the police in this connection.
On Sunday night, a case was filed against Abu Sayeed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2020, by local Awami League leader Abul Kalam Azad at Puthia police station.
Rajshahi Range DIG Abdul Baten said police are conducting operations to arrest the accused.
Local BNP leader Golam Mostafa Mamun told Dhaka Tribune that police only raided Abu Sayeed's home around 12:30am on Monday.
