Sohel Taj, a former state minister for Home Affairs, and son of the country's first prime minister, on Monday submitted a three-point memorandum to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He marched from the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to the prime minister's official residence, Ganabhaban to submit the memorandum.
The memorandum was received by PM's Assistant Private Secretary (APS)-2 Gazi Hafizur Rahman. Awami League Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua accompanied Sohel Taj during the submission.
Sohel Taj's three demands include: declaring April 10 as “Republic Day”, observing the “Jail Killing Day” on November 3 as a national day and incorporating the names, contributions, biographies, and accurate, comprehensive history of all the civil and military organizers, directors, martyrs and valiant freedom fighters of the Liberation War, including the four national leaders, in textbooks with due respect and importance.
Earlier, Sohel Taj held a protest program on Manik Mia Avenue regarding these demands.
He said: “Some might question the benefit of discussing history now. I want to say that very few countries in the world have a glorious history like ours.”
Sohel Taj mentioned that to move the country forward, the new generation must be taught the correct history.
"Then they will be inspired and motivated to move forward with the flag in their hands. I want the new generation to embrace this power. Without knowing the correct history, a bright future cannot be built. We must ensure that no dark force can tarnish our history," he said.
In his appeal, Sohel Taj praised the country's development in various fields and requested the swift implementation of his demands for the sake of the nation's future, paying off the debt to the martyrs of the Liberation War and maintaining their honour.
