The Narayanganj building, where a fire broke out reportedly from an explosion on Saturday morning, had caught fire roughly two years ago, locals claimed.
Locals said that the building, which was owned by Ilyas Dewan, in Nitaiganj, Narayanganj city is quite old and in poor condition.
The building should have been declared abandoned much earlier, locals said.
One person was killed and nine others were injured in the fire incident.
On Saturday morning, the fire incident took place in the building next to Najma Flower Mill in the Dalpatti area. Six units of the fire service brought the fire under control in an effort of one and a half hours.
Confirming the dead and injured, Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anichur Rahman said, "In this incident, Awlad died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Besides, two others were burnt, and seven others were injured."
Alamgir Hossain, deputy assistant director of Zone-2 of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, said: “The building had warehouses for various products, including pulses, grains, and flour. There was a gas line in that building. We are assuming that this accident happened on the gas line. It will be possible to confirm after investigation.”
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage will be investigated later, he further added.
Narayanganj District Superintendent of Police Golam Mostafa Russell said, "There was no explosion here. It was a fire. There was a gas line in the building. It is believed that the incident happened on the gas line. So far, one person died in this incident."
