Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmed on Thursday asked the district commissioners to take action against the agencies that charge extra money for sending workers to different countries.
The minister came up with the order after a meeting with deputy commissioners at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.
Mentioning that many people fall into the clutches of brokers to go to different countries including the Middle East, he instructed the DCs to be aware that no one is harassed.
He said: "Many agencies charge more than the specified amount. Sometimes, people lose everything to go abroad. Instructions have been given to take legal action to stop it.”
Regarding passports, the minister said: "Many people give wrong information in their passports. Because of this, they get into trouble after going abroad. DCs have to pay special attention in this regard.”
Imran Ahmed said: "Now it costs Tk2.5-3.5 lakh to go to Malaysia, which is too much…. The Malaysian expatriate minister will come to Bangladesh soon. There will be discussions with him to reduce this amount.”
