For the first time in Thakurgaon, the Zilla Parishad (district council) elections were held peacefully through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) on Monday to elect six members and two reserved seat members, as the chairman was elected uncontested.
The possible winner of the contest between Awami League Sadar Upazila General Secretary Mosharul Islam and Jubo League district unit President Debashish Dutta Sameer for the general member post was the talk of the town. Sameer won the race.
Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman said that polling was completed in a peaceful atmosphere without any problems.
District Election Officer Shafiqul Islam said that the condition of voting in EVM was promising. “The voters are all public representatives and managed to vote using EVMs.”
According to the information provided by the District Election Office, President of the district unit Awami League Md Sadek Quraishi was elected chairman of the council. Nineteen people contested as general member candidates and nine for women reserved seats. The number of voters in five polling stations in the district was 758.
In Pirganj Upazila, seven people contested for the general member post. Mostafizar Rahman was elected by getting 78 votes out of 145.
But the most discussed results were that one candidate, Nurul Islam, did not get a single vote and two others, Amir Hossain and Moshiur Rahman, got one vote each, while another Mizanur Rahman got three votes for the post of general member in the upazila, Presiding Officer Habibul Islam confirmed the matter.
In Sadar Upazila, Sameer (auto rickshaw) was elected by getting 174 votes, and his nearest rival Mosharul Islam Sarkar (tubewell) got 127 votes.
