Panchagarh boat capsize death toll rises to 50

At least 40 people are still missing

At least 50 people have been found dead while around 40 passengers remain missing after a boat capsized in the northern district of Panchagarh.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department gave the information after suspending their rescue operation for the second day at 8pm on Monday.

The bodies have been recovered from various places of Korotoa and Atrai rivers in Panchagarh and Dinajpur districts.

Mentioning that the search operation had been halted at 8pm, Deputy Assistant Director of Panchagarh Fire Service and Civil Defence Sheikh Md Mahbubul Islam said: “Two of our units will spend the night on the banks of the river. They will start the rescue operation as soon as the dawn breaks.”

Boda Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Imranuzzaman said: “So far, 50 bodies including 25 women, 13 children and 12 men have been recovered.”

Panchagarh Additional District Magistrate and the head of investigation committee Dipankar Roy said that the rescued bodies are being handed over to the families.

The incident was reported from the Aowlia Ghat in Boda Upazila’s Marea Union on Sunday afternoon. 

According to Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Jahirul Islam the boat upturned in the Korotoa River.

A majority of the passengers were returning after offering puja for the Mahalaya at the Bodeshari Temple.
